Flex Work Can Lower the Risk of Heart Disease

In the wake of the global pandemic, the structure of the traditional workplace has undergone a radical transformation. With an increasing number of companies adopting flexible work arrangements, a growing body of research offers new insights into the various benefits of such changes. Flex work has advantages not just for work-life balance but also for critical health outcomes, including potentially reducing the risk for cardiovascular disease.

The Link Between Workplace Flexibility and Heart Health

A Harvard study led by epidemiologist Lisa Berkman, Ph.D. analyzed data from two groups of employees across different sectors: a technology firm with moderately to highly salaried employees and a long-term care facility with a predominantly female, lower-wage workforce. 

This comprehensive research, published in the American Journal of Public Health, marks one of the first of its kind to draw a direct correlation between increased workplace autonomy and improved cardiovascular health.

Orfeu Buxton, Ph.D., a professor of biobehavioral health at Penn State and co-author of the study, highlights the enduring relevance of these findings, especially in a post-pandemic world. Buxton emphasizes the shift in employer attitudes towards more traditional, rigid work models, despite the clear health benefits demonstrated by flexible work arrangements. 

"Employers now face the challenges of high turnover and employee dissatisfaction, which could be mitigated by embracing the culture of flexibility and respect in the workplace," Buxton noted.

The Importance of Early Intervention

The research revolved around a year-long workplace intervention designed by the researchers, aimed at alleviating work-family conflict and creating a more supportive work environment. Supervisors received training to better support their employees' personal and family lives alongside their work responsibilities, and teams worked together to find ways to increase control over schedules and reduce unnecessary tasks.

Employees were given comprehensive cardiovascular health screenings before and after the intervention. The screenings measured six areas, including blood pressure, blood sugar, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, body weight, and tobacco use, and used these to calculate a cardiovascular disease risk score. 

Remarkably, the study showed that such interventions significantly decreased cardiovascular disease risk among employees, especially older ones or those at a higher baseline risk. "When stressful workplace conditions and work-family conflict were mitigated, we saw a reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease among more vulnerable employees," Berkman explained.

The researchers also highlighted that this was achieved without any negative impact on productivity, challenging the prevailing notion that more hours and rigid schedules equate to better work outcomes. 

Implications for Employers and Policy Makers

These findings serve as a potent reminder of the critical role that working conditions play in shaping health outcomes. For low- and middle-wage workers, who traditionally have less control over their schedules and face greater health inequities, flexible work arrangements could be a game-changer. 

The study suggests that rethinking how work is structured—prioritizing outcomes and favoring flexibility over rigid scheduling—can lead to healthier, more satisfied, and ultimately more productive employees.

Moreover, the study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that stress, exacerbated by inflexible work environments and work-life imbalance, is a significant contributor to cardiovascular disease. Further research in diverse work settings is needed to validate and expand on these results.

As businesses and organizations navigate the post-pandemic landscape, the call for flexible working arrangements has become louder and more urgent. “We hope to change the conversation on the culture of work, realizing that flexibility and treating employees with respect can lead to higher productivity and lower turnover too,” Buxton commented to The Guardian
